Setting up a Wi-Fi network between Ubuntu and Nokia E61i

I'm trying to use my computer's internet connection from my Nokia E61i. I take it this is called an ad-hoc connection. I have tried creating a network by going to the "Create New Wireless Network" option when clicking on the network computers in the system tray, by going to "Manual Configuration" and also by using Wi-Fi Radar. But I can't pick it up. Not on my phone, not from another computer and also not when searching via the terminal. I can see it in Wi-Fi Radar when creating it there, but it shows now signal.

I can see the shop next door's Wi-Fi Network. I have also searched around on the internet, but can't find an solution.

Any ideas?

Thanks.
