Second Monitor Image Sometimes Freezes

While playing videos on my second monitor (which is the main thing I use my second monitor for) the image will get stuck, though the video keeps playing "underneath" and if I move the mouse cursor onto the 2nd monitor the screen will catch up to the video's current place. I never had this problem before; I recently re-installed my OS so I could dual-boot with Windows. Ever since then I've had this problem, as well as Google Chrome flickering sometimes. I've tried several things I found by googling, including disabling hardware acceleration in Chrome's settings, which seems to fix the video freezing, but adds quite a bit of "tearing" on various web pages (that actually happened just now as I'm typing this).

I have a Dell Inspiron 5559 laptop, with an HDMI output, and Linux Mint 18.3. This has happened on two different external monitors.

I'm sure many of you will want to tell me that laptops aren't great at graphics and I just need to get used to it, but note that I had this computer with this OS for 6 months or so and it worked fine, but this only started after I reinstalled with the dual-boot setup.

Hi, this is the kind of symptoms I got once (for about a year) when my graphics card was dying (on a desktop PC).

I'm guessing... your graphics card has over heated at some stage, and/or is overheating when working hard to do your bidding.

If your laptop has a dedicated graphics card you may be able to repair the laptop.

If it doesn't, and uses an integrated design it will be much harder to repair.

I could be wrong.

The only other thing I can think of if power saving and/or screen saver apps trying to save you money.

Regards Glenn
