Scanner not working in a HP 2135 All-in-one printer
I recently purchased a HP 2135 All-in-one (print, scan, copy) printer. The printer and copy works well with my Ubuntu 11.10, but any scanning softwares, such as Simple Scan and Xsane are unable to detect the scanner. I searched the internet and found that it may be due to the hplip package. The printer requires hplip 3.15.6, but 11.10 has only the 3.11.7 version. How can I upgrade to the required version of the package without doing a distro upgrade? It will be very helpful if you can mention any other way to scan without doing the hplip upgrade.
Thanks for your help.

You really do need to re-install a modern version of Ubuntu. Maverick 11.10 reached its end of life in 2012! The HPLIP site offers a version for Ubuntu 12 which might work, but it's obviously not guaranteed to work with Ubuntu 11, nor to work with your printer.
Get the latest long-term-support version (16.04 Xenial) and you can keep using that until 2021. And that means re-installing: you can't update from 11 to 16.
You are right. I have upgraded to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, then installed hplip 3.16.10 using the link provided by TBOne. Now I can scan using Xsane. Thanks for your kind help!
