SB Live 5.1 Problems

I'm using Ubuntu 6.06 RC, and just randomly, my soundcard stopped working. I see it in lsmod, and lspci. And the mixer shows it, but I get an error messager when starting alsamixer and various music players

I don't know what I've done to cause this problem but I didn't do anything major recently.

This is what I get when I try running alsamixer:

Code:
steven@stevenscpu:~$ alsamixer

alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such device
steven@stevenscpu:~$
And this is what I get when I try playing a file in XMMS:

soundcard

alsamixer needs to be in su root

BTW, if any other aps like Xine for example is on then XMMS wouldn't work.

Also, configure alsamixer with ALL music aps closed. In fact, reboot and close all aps including web browsers then configure.

addendum: Even improper closure to brown outs to crashes could be the culprit.

Ubuntu handles root a bit different, you use sudo for every command you want to do that requires root.

But anyway, I did use sudo on alsamixer and still got the same output. And all music apps were closed the first time but I did it again with everything closed to make sure and still got the same thing.

my bad;
you might need to alsaconf in root again to configure your soundcard

looks like you have more than one soundcard
snd-emu10k1 driver
snd-bt87x driver

configure then use alsactl store 0 or 1
I believe

if it's digital then alsamixer switch to on for analog/digital
