I have a Lexmark X73 multifunction printer running on Mandrake 9.2 on a Athlon/nForce Shuttle box. The printer drake recognizes the printer corectly and says it's all setup, but when I try to print test pages or from an application, nothing happens.
i assume that you are running cups. Open a browser and type
# localhost:631
if you get the cups screen, then cups is running. If not, than cups needs to start. I don't know how to do that in mandrake, but it's somethig to get you started anyways.
When I go to the DrakXservices function in the Mandrake Control Center, it says that cups is running and is configured to start on boot. Is cups for local?
Are you running kde? If so, look under the printer manager (in the control center-->peripherals). Does your printer show up there? Do you have to do any configuration to your printer? Also, instead of localhost try your hostname. For example, if your host name is steelshephard, you'd type
Code:
steelshephard:631
I've always had better luck getting the printer to run using cups directly, and then tweaking it in the kde print manager.
I also searched mandrake's webpage and found that for almost all lexmark printers, mandrake can find them, but it looks like it might be difficult to get it to work. YOu can also try linuxprinting.org but the site must be down or something.
I don't know what I did differently, but now when I type localhost:631 into the browser I get into cups. It sees my printer and says it's working fine and ready to accept print jobs. When I told it to print a test page, cups thinks it did it successfully. It even showed up in the completed jobs list.
Nothing printed. I know the printer works. It's a dual boot box with win98se on the other drive.
I have the latest driver installed from the linuxprinting.org site. When I use the utility for the z42 driver, it says it cannot get the printer status. I wonder if cups is communicating with the printer using some other driver than the z42.
I'm thinking I might be better off getting a new printer since I'll never be able to use all the features even when I get it running.
Getting a new printer is the easiest option. HP printers works extremely well, and I've had great success with my Epson Stylus. Both of these brands are highly supported and work very well.
