SATA3 DVD/RW drive improperly recognized - unusable

Hi,

I recently completed my first DIY computer build.
It is a simple job with a single 250 Gb hard drive and a DVD/RW for installation purposes. Both of these drives are attached to SATA-3 connections on the ASRock A75M-HVS motherboard. The hard drive gives no problems - but all is not well with the DVD/RW. The BIOS (or rather UEFI - I have a UEFI-GPT-ELILO setup) sees the optical drive OK - and the system (openSUSE 12.2) does to a certain extent...

If I look at Applications -> System Tools -> Disks, I see listed:

250 GB Hard Disk
WDC WD2500AAKX-001CA0

CD Drive
HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GH22NS70

So the DVD is there even if it's referred to as a lowly CD Drive.

On the underlying detail page the Model type appears again but no Media (even though a disk was in at the time)and Device is given as:
/dev/sr0 (Read-Only)

dmesg had given the following information:
...
[ 9.791041] sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 48x/48x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
[ 9.791052] cdrom: Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20
[ 9.791503] sr 1:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
...
I've tried all sorts of parameter combinations for the DVD drive in the UEFI setup to try and boot from it but up to now I haven't had a smidgin of success just the message: "Reboot and Select proper Boot device or Insert Boot media in selected Boot device and press key" (even when a bootable CD/DVD is in it).

I'm totally out of ideas for testing this, other than to try the drive in another machine to see if it at least works as it should (but I don't have another machine with a SATA connection).

Incidentally I installed the system from an external USB optical drive - that works OK!

Any suggestions would be very welcome...

Hardware again:
Motherboard: ASRock A75M-HVS
Processor: AMD A6-3500
Optical drive: LG DVR DL 22X,SATA
HD: Western Digital Caviar Blue WD2500AAKX 250 Gb

Let me ask a question here.

Are you saying that no CD/DVD can be booted to this new system from sata? If so then I don't see it being an OS issue yet. Borrow a pressed cd and see if it boots or a commercial made dvd even if it is windows to test if the thing could boot.

Be sure to remove any usb cd/dvd drives and also any usb flash or external hard drives with power off. Be sure to boot directly to bios and carefully observe choices. The choices of boot device may show up in more than a few menus.

@jefro,
Yes, that is one of the things I'm saying.

When you say: "pressed CD" do you mean a commercially produced one? I have enough CD's/DVD's with iso's lying around from which I've booted successfully on other machines but they are all home made - not commercial. Would one of those do for your test? (I'm not too sure where I could borrow a commercial one .).

Thanks for you interest and please inform...
