SATA drive/controller card locks up in Ubuntu 8.04

Hi folks,

Loving Ubuntu 8.04 by the way!!!

What is happening is I just put in a PCI SATA/usb2.0 controller card and a 160GB SATA hdd. Everything is fine during boot and using anything else. I can mount the drive and look at the contents in File Browser, even record to it with Mythtv. But as soon as I try to watch video rec'd from Mythtv or previously recorded vid stored on that drive, it locks-up the PC about 2 seconds in. The vid freezes, the audio loops, keyboard is unresponsive. I end up having to hit reset button. I was going to post my /sbin/lspci but I don't see that in the /sbin. Is there another file or log I can post to help w/ diagnosis?

Here is what I know:

OS: Ubuntu 8.04
cpu: Pent.III coppermine 1Ghz
mobo: TYAN S1854 Trinity 400
ram: 768MB PC133
hdd: /dev/sda1 directory "/" ext3 12GB
hdd: /dev/sdb1 directory "/media/Media" fuseblk 160GB
controller card: Encore ENLADP-402 USB2.0/SATA PCI adapter

dmesg output:

hdd: /dev/sdb1 directory "/media/Media" fuseblk 160GB

I understand you have this HDD permanently connected to this box and are not multibooting? This fuseblk probably indicates you are using NTFS formatted drive? Why not use Linux native filesystems like EXT3, XFS or JFS? This may or may not be to reason of hang, still, better get rid of it.
/var/log/messages may contain something about this lock-up.

Yes, permanent drive and this is a Ubuntu only system no multiboot.
And yes it is ntfs, I just pulled it and controller out of an XP box and threw it into Ubuntu box...

I'll reformat it to ext3 for something to try, don't need ntfs.

not much in /var/log/messages:
-------
May 8 10:12:01 uss-reliant syslogd 1.5.0#1ubuntu1: restart.
May 8 10:16:32 uss-reliant exiting on signal 15
-------

Thanks,
engtech

I think that did it. Must have just been a read issue w/ ntfs. I can read/write video files on that drive now, no lockups.

Thanks for your input!

Glad to hear it. NTFS driver for Linux is a hack, no wonder it has trouble with large files. Even older version of ReiserFS couldn't handle very large files.
