Sane - [Language Error] ?

I am having a number of problems scanning to my Epson DX4400 mfp on Arch.

I have got the printing working, more or less, then I tried to implement scanning and installed the following packages from AUR:

iscan 2.28.1-2
iscan-data 1.14.0-1
iscan-plugin-cx4400 2.1.3-1
sane

Now if I enter:

$ sane-find-scanner

I get

found USB scanner (vendor=0x04b8 [Language Error], product=0x083f [Language Error]) at libusb:012:004

So it finds the scanner but reports a [Language Error], and I do not know what that means.

If someone could put me back on the right track I would be grateful

Andrew

I did some googling, and found this link that may be of some help.

-->http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-908443.html

It seems the 'Language Error' can be ignored.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Although the scanner is found, scanimage -L returns no scanner found, so I assumed thatb the problem was the Language Error.

I will read though the thread that you found and report back [S]if[/S] when I find the fix.

Well I have made some changes, here are my notes:

Make sure 'epkowa' is an uncommented line in /etc/sane.d/dll.conf

Add this line to epkowa.conf in /etc/sane.d

interpreter usb 0x04b8 0x083f /usr/lib/iscan/libesint7E

Uncomment this line in 99-iscan.rules

# For Linux >= 2.6.22 without CONFIG_USB_DEVICE_CLASS=y
# If the following rule does not exist on your system yet, uncomment it
ENV{DEVTYPE}=="usb_device", MODE="0664", OWNER="root", GROUP="root"

not too sure about the last one yet, but at least I get some sort of response from scanimage:

$ scanimage -L
device `epkowa:interpreter:012:010' is a Epson (unknown model) flatbed scanner
# scanimage -L
device `epkowa:interpreter:012:010' is a Epson (unknown model) flatbed scanner
$ scanimage -T
scanimage: open of device epkowa:interpreter:012:010 failed: Invalid argument

I don't like the "unknown model" or the "Invalid argument" in the responses. Most googling points to permission problems, but the same occurs if I execute as root. I have attached a strace file from the scanimage -T above, just in case anyone can give me another nudge in the right direction.
Attached Files
File Type: txt strace.txt (108.8 KB, 51 views)

For some reason I was missing a file in /usr/var/lib/iscan. The file "interpreter" should have been created and read:

interpreter usb 0x04b8 0x083f /usr/lib64/iscan/libesint7E

The details vary depending on the printer model.

When I reinstalled everything from scratch and undid all my amendments, all I needed to do was add the above file and it worked.
