I am trying to do some HDTV video editing at present and am having great difficulty inasmuch as the computer I am using is showing all the outward signs of having too much load placed on it. For example, I imported just under 1Gb of video files (just 11 minutes worth) into the editor and got like heavy HDD activity for several minutes afterwards, during which time the entire system was brought to a crawl. It took about 7 minutes before things got back to normal. With no other apps running!
During the period when the machine appeared to be working really hard, it was using 53% of the CPU and 575Mb of virtual memory. It's an AMD Athlon X2 with 3Gb of RAM and 1Gb of onboard RAM in the video card. There is 40Gb free HDD space. Am I expecting too much of the hardware or is it that the video editing program (Corel videostudio Pro X3) just inefficiently written?
THanks,
CC

This appears to be a Windows program. Are you running it with Wine? That may be the problem. Have you tried a native linux program like avidemux to see if the performance has improved?
ciao,
jdk
No, I am running it directly within a spare Windows partition. My hardware meets or exceeds that shown in the posting above so I am questioning whether they have understated the requirements to get more sales. Reason being my own experience with it plus what I have come across in these reports here: http://download.cnet.com/Corel-Video...-10029706.html
If you skip the "Editor's Review" (what planet do these people live on?) and scroll down to the actual users' opinions, you can see that others have had similar problems to those I have experienced. Fortunately, it's only a trial copy and the Win partition was a spare one, so the only thing I have thus far wasted is heaps of TIME.

So... you're running it on Windows, not Linux?
Is this Windows "Partition" some sort of Virtual system on a Linux host?
Do you have a dual boot system: Windows and Linux, and are running it on the Windows boot, in which case perhaps you should be in a Windows forum?
Can you tell us more about the environment you're running it under?
There is no Windows emulation or virtualisation here of any sort. I am running this app directly in Windows XP, in a spare Windows partition I keep for just this sort of purpose, when I cannot find an equivalent app for Linux. HDTV editing happens to be one of the few areas where Linux apps are not as cutting edge as their Windows equivalents and the type of video format I am using (Panasonic's AVCHD) has been a particular problem in this respect.
