I could be mistaken about how to do this, but I'll give it a try.
Set the cylinders, heads, and sectors in the BIOS. From that information, the BIOS can determine the size of the drive. If the drive is large (greater than 40 Gig), in the same BIOS screen that allows you to edit cyls, heads, etc., tab to the right and change NORMAL to LBA. Save changes and exit BIOS.
Using fdisk (or cfdisk), partition the dive, write the changes and exit. Then re-boot.
The drive parameters that were loaded when you first booted will ocnflict with the new parameters set by fdisk. Re-booting will load the new parameters.
My terminology may be incorrect, but that's how I understand the process.
