Removable IDE Drives (Fat32)

Hi,

I've got a removable IDE drive (caddy) which I'd like to see when running Linux (I can see it using Win98 on the same machine), there are few problems though:

The drive wasn't physically connected when I installed linux.
This drive fdisk configuration must remain the same as it is used on a Mackie HDR (A hard disk recording machine).

When I connect the drive this what happens:

Dmesg:

hde: probing with STATUS(0x00) instead of ALTSTATUS(0x80)

and later:

hde: status timeout: status = 0xff {busy}
hde: drive not ready for command
ide2: reset timed-out, status = 0xff

and later:

end_request: I/O error, dev 21:00 (hde) sector 0
( same like with sector 2,4,6...30).

I can't run cfdisk whatsoever, and fdisk -l /dev/hde will give the same end_request error.

I'm running kernel 2.4.x, but if I switch to 2.2.x - everything works fine. Googling this problem, I've found that this has something to do with the fact that I'm using the sound-blaster ide controller.

Any help/hints will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Roey.

Ok, it seems like kernel 2.4 doesn't like the SB IDE controller. I've connected the disk to another controller and everything works fine...
