Hi, I am completely new to mounting any type of hardware device in red hat 9. Can someone please tell me whats all necessary to install a (fairly older) cd/rom-dvd-rom drive to my linux box? i.e. do I need to install software drivers of any type? -th4nx
You need a cable to connect the drive to the motherboard. And you need a power source. From there you need an OS to read the media inside the drive.
If this OS is Linux, you shouldn't need any drivers, but occasionally, in the extremely (never?) off chance you do, post up. In a terminal type:
dmesg
This will show the boot up message. In there you should see the CDROM listed. If it is, you should be fine, feel free to post it up though.
My BIOS picks it up. I installed RedHat via cd-rom images. The problem actually goes a little deeper. I recently installed fluxbox, and can't seem to find Samba anywhere (I checked the fluxbox windows, and then looked all over my machine in a terminal). I'm using my win2K box to post, so I cant transfer the bootup output to the net until I find Samba ...would you possible know where it resides, and how to execute it?? Thanks
