recomendation, gpu with or without directx 9

Im going to buy a new gpu and some more memory to speed things up a bit, Im not going for top of the line specs since im not that into games (well I am, just wont admit it ).
So: Do I buy a card supporting directx 9 (nvidia fx5200/5600, not newer = too much money ) or do I just go for an older card which in my oppinion makes more sense. Ive seen a cheap GeForce4 Ti4280 that im intrested in but Ive also spotted a cheap fx5200.
How about ati? I know answering these questions are hard, but just some comments please!
Directx9... will there be any games using this ported to linux in a future not to distant? As I said IM not that much of a UBERgamer but still, right now im using a tnt2...

My box will probably limit a purchase:
amd athlon 1000 ghz, 256 133 sdram (adding 512), all on a asus A7V, via vt8363(kt133)

Stay clear of the GeForce MX cards (they are good, but only at mainstream or "entry" level - no decent pixel shading, etc...)

I'd recommend GF3 minimum, go for a GF4Ti if you find a really good deal, else go for the GeForce Fx cards.

I can't comment much on other cards (namely ATI) since I have no expirience with them. The DX9 thing is not a huge consideration since 3D on linux means OpenGL - ported games are ported from DX to GL.

I'm running a 1GHz Athlon with 512MB DDR and a GF3 Ti200, and UT2003 (with all the detail settings including physics set to max) is slowed down more by the CPU than the GPU.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replys guys, It seems that the fx-cards doesnt really seem to be any good (compared to their price of course). After reading some more reviews on ti4280 I actually think thats what Im going to buy. However dunno bout the ati but Ill check it out psycho_matic!

Cheers, klod

Don't go for the FX 5200, its a waste of cash and silicon.
