reading RAID drives on a different unit ?

is there anyway to recover data from drives from a Maxtor One Touch III unit that has died ?
Have taken the two 500Gb SATA drives and attempted to connected individually via a USB SATA adaptor,
but one says it's
type : vfat
size 931Gb (199%)
But can not mount it
and the other drive says that it is a 500Gb unformatted drive

Forgive my ignorance, but WTF is a "Maxtor One Touch III unit"? A link(s) to a description & some specs might help us help you. (Better you should track down the info once & post it, than expect/hope each potential helper to duplicate the effort.)
