Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

RAID info from linux

Hi All,

Was wondering if there is any way ( from linux) to determine the physical disk layout on the server - given that we have created a RAID1 on the server with 2 disks ( 1 TB each). I wanted to know if there is a way to see the 2TB inside linux.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

NO, you can't see 2TB in RAID 1 (mirroring), maybe if you used RAID 0 (striping)

but you don't provide enough information about your system, like what type of RAID controller is installed and which distro your server uses.

But then again, you can get info,
let's say you have 3Ware RAID controller card or maybe Adaptec:

- for 3Ware there's "tw_cli" command line software to show status

- Adaptec uses ArcConf (/usr/StorMan/arcconf)

the output of course vary, but all give you detailed information about your RAID

and there's also other RAID hardware, like Areca etc... which uses it's own software for management.

It's your call...

The server is Dell R 710 and it uses PERC running Red Hat 5.5 .I know it is not possible without installing extra tools , but just wanted to know.

Thank you for your reply.

Dell openmanage is your best bet. You can access information from the CLI, not just the web interface. I am thinking you wanted to get the information without installing additional software though. You will need to find the right version of openmanage for your system from the Dell web site if you want to go that way.

Yes, with dmidecode command we can find a whole lot of system information. I guessed finding the physical disk layout is s is difficult from the OS as we see only a logical disks.Anyways, I will investigate this on our test servers

Thanks for your input.
