Angry Problems with nVidia 4496 and Mandrake 9.1

I'm a first time Linux user, so please bare with my ignorance...

At one point, I did have X loading with Dirver set to "nvidia" (rather than "nv") but openGL was not working. Currently, when I invoke startx, it crashes out. I tried to re-install the nvidia drivers, but with the nvidia-installer, I recieved the following errors:

Unable to determine the properties for file '/usr/lib/libGL.so.1.0.4496' (No such file or directory).

Check 'OK'

The installer has encountered the following error during installation: 'Cannot backup /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.0.4496'. Continue anyway?

Check yes, then:

Unable to determine properties for file '/usr/lib/libGLcore.so.1.0.4496' (No such file or directory).

Then the same backup error on that file. I continued with the rest of the install without errors.

Here is the Config-4 contents:

First, how did you install the nvidia driver? Can you let us know the steps.

Where did the driver come from? Did you download it from www.nvidia.com and did you follow all of the instructions?

Did you install as root and with X shut down?

I ran the installer while X was shutdown, as root by entering:

sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-4496-pkg2.run

The file was downloaded from the nVidia site.

The XFree86.0.log file:

home.comcast.net/~tokerb/XFree86.0.log
