Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

printer/scanner compatibility questions...

I have a Dell A940 all-in-one printer/scanner I'd like to use with my linux PC.
(700Mhz athlon, 1gb RAM, Mandriva 2008)
The drivers only come in Windows variety so I downloaded the W2000 drivers and tried running them under Wine.
The setup wizard came up, created its directories and installed everything, did something with “activating the spooler”, the final EULA came up, and then the program told me it was unable to see the device, check cable.
It's not the cable, as the system recognized it, and recognized it as a printer as soon as I plugged in the usb cable.
In fact, it tried to operate the printer under the CUPS software, but failed.
Is this a bug, or am I not doing something properly with these drivers?

Visiting the SANE and OpenPrinting sites shows that it is unsupported or is a paperweight, sorry;

You might try Turboprint.

Also, since Dell now sells Linux computers, it would be reasonable to think they might be at least a little bit helpful with getting peripherals to work---especially their own. Why not call them and see what they say?
