Can anyone recommend a combined printer/scanner network printer (preferably wireless) that works well with Linux?

The Brother DCP-750CW looks great; the Brother website actually goes into detail about how to set everything up with Linux. The printer is USB, wired ethernet and Wi-Fi. The DCP-540CN is also good, but without Wi-Fi. Both also have flash memory slots.

Can anybody who uses one of these let me know how well they work for them, or recommend a similar product that might be better?

I want to set this up so it can be used by two SuSE machines: one 10.0, the other 9.2. Ideally, I don't want to have to upgrade the 9.2 machine. I've looked at the instructions on the Brother website, and it looks like everything can be set up easily with Yast (on SuSe 10, at least), but I don't want any surprises! My computers don't have wireless, but the router is wireless. I assume this is fine? (I had a quick look at the manual and this seems to be okay. The printer can be connected ad-hoc as well, at least through Windows)

I dunno. The price of the "HP Jetdirect ew2400 802.11g Wireless Print Server" seems about the same as the Brother DCP-750CW (£130) and I'd still need to buy a printer! Besides, does this print server handle combined printer/scanners?

Actually depends on your network and printing utilization, if your printing is heavy then I would recommend you use HP products. If not then every print server is ok as long as affortable.

If you want low cost all in 1 printer server (print/fax/scan), setup a general spec linux PC (as long as can allow you to scan a picture), install samba server(or ftp), scanner softwars, cups and any printer which work with Linux.
Then point your scanner softwares always save file in particular share folder (or you can use email too).

I'm not running an office here! We don't use our existing printer much (an Epson C20UX). But it's not very good, can't be accessed from the other machine (I tried to setup printer sharing, but never got it to work), and we're just plain tired of feeding it ink.

We want the printer AWAY from the computer, so it MUST be a network printer. Since combos are cheap and we have no scanner, it's logical to get one of those.

Here's the requirements:

* Must work with Linux (duh!)
* Must be network (preferably wireless)
* Must have scanner
* Would be nice if it has separate cartridges for each colour
* Would be nice to have card slots

Can I get this for £100-130?

To answer your other questions:

I'm particularly interested in the Brother DCP-750CW, which judging from the Brother site seems to have very good Linux support. However, some similar printers have mixed comments on openprinting.org (the DCP-750CW itself is not reviewed), so any comments regarding this particular printer would be most welcome!

The only other recommendation I would make is the Samsung SCX-4720FN plus the Internal 802.11 Interface option.. but then we've already blown past your budget by quite a bit and it's a laser printer rather than an inkjet so it would print B/W only. it is supported in Linux and can scan, print, Copy and fax and print documents from a USB drive directly.

Personally I find laser printers to be faster than inkjets, and cost considerably less to purchase supplies for in the long run...

I've now got the Brother DCP-750CW. Getting the wired network setup to work using SuSE 10.0 was easy, but I spent a couple of fruitless hours prior to that trying to get it working wirelessly. This doesn't even seem to be a Linux related problem, since it won't even connect to the router. It finds the network name, then I enter the password and... connection failed. I know I had the password correct because I set it to the shortest, simplest one possible. When I switched it to WEP the printer said "connected", but the router didn't show it on the DHCP list. I've had trouble connecting my Nintendo DS to this router as well, so I might try a firmware update.

Lastly, Yast in SuSE 9.2 doesn't allow me to change the printer model (ie. specify the driver) when using network printers, so I guess I'll just have install the latest SuSE. It needs it anyway, to be honest! (A lot of websites hang and the problem wasn't fixed by upgrading to the latest Firefox. Dunno the cause of that!)

Well, I've done a firmware upgrade on the router and can confirm that WAS the problem! After the update the printer connected first time, no problems. Well done to Belkin for releasing a wireless router that... doesn't route wirelessly! One slight oddity when switching from wired to wireless: the printer changes its node name AND MAC depending on which interface you use! So, if it's already configured on your PC, or you operate MAC filtering, you'll need to make changes if you swap.

Scanning was easy to set up as well. Followed the step by step instructions on the Brother website and was scanning with Xsane in no time (you can also scan and print to/from a memory card, or print from Pictbridge: This USB port doesn't support memory devices, only Pictbridge). It's also easy to setup the scan key on the machine to start scanning and send the image to a remote computer; Useful if it's distant from the scanner. You may want to change the shell script to give a higher resolution, though, since it's only 100 dpi initially. Unfortunately, I could only scan this way by disabling my computer's firewall. The Brother website says: "If you are running an internal firewall, configure it to allow port 54925 through on UDP.", but I couldn't find any setting like that in Yast. Does anybody know how to do this?

In summing up, this printer seems to work fully under Linux. My initial problems were just down to crappy router firmware. Since I haven't compared this device against other printers and scanners I can't say for sure, but the output of both features seems pretty good to me. Maybe printing is a bit faint, but that could just be down to poor quality paper, and might be fixed by tweaking settings. Scanning seems very good, though scanning to card seems to use quite a low quality JPEG setting which can't be altered. You can also scan to card as a PDF file, and I'm guessing scanning a number of pages in one session adds them to the same file.

I have no hesitation recommending Brother for all your Linux compatible needs. The site gives step-by-step instructions, rather than the "Here are some printer driver's we wrote. Now get on with it" approach of other manufacturers. This printer is also designed to be used solo, and hence can do housekeeping tasks such as ink monitoring and cleaning from the front panel. No more Windows utilities just to find out which ink needs to be replaced!

Can someone help me with this printer: When I print from my computer (SuSE 10.0), I get the top two centimetres cut off, and a large border at the bottom of the paper. Adjusting the top border in Conqueror has no effect at all.

I've tried accessing "configure printer" through the CUPS web interface, but I got a username and password prompt. I read the CUPS documentation and set a username and password for CUPS, but now I just get a "403 forbidden: You don't have permission to access the resource on this server" without getting the chance to login at all! Even removing all the logins from the CUPS account list doesn't change it back to asking for a password.

Can anybody help me with this, or ideally tell me how to disable password for CUPS administration.

did you try restarting cups after you changed it?

If you tell me what file you edited, I can grab an unedited one off of my suse box for you, or perhaps you could copy the file off of your other suse box.

Okay, I've got something new.

If I try and connect to CUPS through http://192.168.2.4:631/printers, I'll get the page for the printer. If I then click on "configure printer", I get the forbidden message.

But if I go to http://localhost:631, I can logon if I go to the Admin option at the top of the page. Then if I choose "Manage printers" from this admin page I'll see the printer. If I choose "Configure printer" from here, I'll get a message saying:

An error occurred while loading http://192.168.2.2:631/admin/?op=con...ame=binary_p1:
Could not connect to host 192.168.2.2 (port 631).

Do you see the problem? It's not going to localhost or 192.168.2.4, it's going to 192.168.2.2! Which is neither the address of my computer or printer! (I think it might be my XBox)

If I go to the address:
http://localhost:631/admin/?op=confi...name=binary_p1

instead, I get an error from CUPS:
Error:
server-error-service-unavailable

So I guess the problems here are:

* Why does it make a difference logging in whether I go to localhost or the actual IP address of my computer?
* Why does CUPS try to go to a completely different address when configuring the printer?
* Even with the correct address entered, why do I get an error message?


Could the problem here be that the printer was configured with Yast, rather than CUPS?

Yet another problem...

I've just recently changed my router to a Netgear DG834G. Now my printer won't print!

I thought it might be a problem with the encryption, so I turned that off and made it open, but the printer still won't print!

The printer says "connected" and the router shows the printer on its list. Sometimes they seem to fail: the printer doesn't show up on the router list, and the printer says "connection error", but I can't print even if they see each other. Jobs just go into the queue saying "processing", then "Queued", then nothing else.

Could this be a router firewall problem?

I should point out that I can still browse the internet wirelessly with my Ipaq, so it is a problem with the printer only.

Just to add, I've found that I can FTP from the printer (ie. read from the inserted memory card) fine, but can't print or scan!

I've tried adding port 137 (the print port) to the services of the router and added it to the "outbound services" rules of the firewall, but this has no effect (nor is it supposed to, I guess, since the firewall is for external traffic)

Any help would be much appreciated!
