I used to be an intel guy, but I prefer to go with the little guy. They have stuff to prove and market share to gain, so I think that would hopefully mean that their product is just a little bit better. Also, I don't like intel's approach to the 64bit CPU, they are trying to make the 32bit CPU obsolete (down the road of course) while AMD is making their's backward compatable. My .02
look at my stats below, i run an athlon xp 1700+ at over 1900 mhz... basically, i get the performance of a pentium 4 2000mhz chip at about 80 bucks. can't beat that.
HERE'S THE BIG REASON TO PICK AMD OVER INTEL
intel releases their pentium processor, you need a certain socket mobo (socket 1? i can't rememebr)
then, pentium 2, cool, a new cpu, wait, ,NEW MOBO TOO! socket 2?
allright, pentium 3, and celeron, some more new cpu's.. ooops, gotta switch to socket 370!!!!
allright, ok, ok, ok, now the p4 is comin' out... surely, they'll get their act together and use this socket for a good long time.
oh wait, 6 months later, the p4a?!?!?!?!? comes out, need a whole new socket. that means you have a p4 socket on yer mobo, and can't fit yer p4 cpu in it... wtf???!!!!?!?!?!?!?
AND NOW FOR THE AMD STORY.......
amd k6 cpu, HMM... use............ SOCKET A
amd duron spitfire, ,morgan, use....... SOCKET A
amd athlon t-birid... use......... SOCKET A
amd athlonxp palomino, t-bred, (hammer!) use... SOCKET A
any amd cpu made in the last 6+years.. use........ SOCKET A
AMD was born to be for the user... switch mobo's, use the same cpu.. switch cpu's, use the same mobo... i don't give a rat's ass about market share, and bein' the little guy. AMD makes a damn good product, and has the platforms to support it.
don't go pentium... as soon as p4b, or pentium 5 come out, you'll need another mobo, and the one with the intel chipset that you spent 200 bucks on will do no good. my gigabyte ga7vrxp with the via kt333 chipset will support any cpu that AMD makes in the near future. i say near future meaning the next year, amd will probably use socket a for years and years and years to come, but we live in an uncertain world, they might discover that their new "socket Q" gives unparralled performance compared to socket a, but who knows about that kind of crap...
USE AMD, MAN.. IT'S MADE IN GERMANY... NOT IS SOME INDONESIAN SWEATSHOP!
The AMD CPUs are aimed at performance and the Intel do tend to go to the server side if you grab a P IV and take the heatsink off while on it will
clock it self down to prevent from burning whereas the AMD XP
will melt through the board !!!
I've got an AMD XP1800, an AMD K6-2 @ 400Mhz, my girlfriend's PC is a Duron & 900Mhz. I built all three & I must say that I like AMD (as if you couldn't tell). The motherboard thing is a big factor in my choice also the price difference & the ability to upgrade for less money & hassle. I recently worked on a Celeron & needed to find a motherboard, there were more choices for the Duron then the Celeron, I checked several websites. I like AMD they work good & I haven't had any problems out of them.
I love my AMD machine, although there is to this day an hardware incompatibility with my motherboard and the Sound Blaster Audigy. (pops and crackles) That was the only issue I've ever had. The incompatibility is due to the combination of chips on my motherboard. The AMD 761 & the VIA 686B. I would not use an ABIT KG7 (non raid) if at all possible. Generally, ABIT boards are great. I've built several systems with them. If I was just getting into the market right now I would buy an ABIT KD7, or one of the other newer ABIT boards.
