PCTEL HSP56 DAA v56 e v7.0 modem

i need to install a modem in Slackware Linux 8.1. i'm running a PCChips motherboard, M758LMR, SiS630, with a PCTEL HSP56 AMR DAA v56 e v7.0 modem. i have 2 drivers available on my windows partition, which is mounted as /win-c on /dev/hda1 etc, so i can see the drive ok from linux. i've either :-

c:\modem.tar

or

c:\pctel.rar

. . . . but i had a hell of a time getting the right driver for win98 for this modem, so a bit stumped.

all i can find on the net is info on installing rpm's, but can't find an rpm package, so before i break my linux install again ((( well actually for the 3rd time! ))) can anyone tell me in simple english what the hell to do with 'em. just i'd quite like to be able to at least login to my other forum to give me summat to do while i sit bewildered going through the rest of it . . . . ;-)

i can do this from the command line, or from KDE or Gnome if that makes it any easier. but i already broke KDE once and knackered my root login somehow and needed to reinstall again, so quite keen to avoid that one again if poss . . . .

i have trawled through the net on this and found lots of gibberish . . . i can't even seem to get the cp command right to copy over to hda2, and as for man pages etc, i'd need to know where to look ot start with ;-)

cheers guys . . . . .

neil ;-)

ok, further investigation reveals . . . .

sis2003.tgz is now in my root directory.

tar -xzf sis2003.tgz gives

pctel.tar.gz
ptserial.tar.gz
install

i've tried

make install or
./install

i get errors i don't understand, but i get new files ptserial.o and pctel.o ( i think . . i have to come back to windows for i'net ) in libs???
