PCMCIA / USB Modems for Linux

Hi everybody!

I have installed a PCMCIA (PC-card) 56K modem on my Asus A6-series laptop (modem manufacturer is Conceptronic, with Cirrus logic chipset), but it isn't recognized at all bu SuSE 10.1!

Any idea?

Cascaded, anybody suggesting a properly Linux-supported (i.e. with drivers and whatsoever) USB 56K modem?

OK, blame on me, but I've already wasted 60euros (that is, 76.167 U.S. bucks) in this useless PC-card, and now I would like to have a safe shot.

Thank you all!

My only experience with using a PCMCIA modem is with Damn Small Linux on a very old laptop. The only modules that seem to be associated with it are serial and serial_cs, which don't sound device specific to me. I guess I am suggesting that if the card is recognized by the card manager, it shouldn't need anything special.

With DSL the PCMCIA devices are queried and controlled with cardctl. Can you see any indication the card is recognized? Relevant commands would be:

cardctl info <slot #>
cardctl config <slot #>
cardctl ident <slot #>
