Unhappy P4C800E-Dlx: ICH5/S-ATA and Intel Pro onboard network incompatibility ?

Hi,

I'm running Mandrake 9.2RC1 (kernel 2.4.22) and I can't make work S-ATA boot drive and Intel Pro onboard network.

The Asus P4C800E-Dlx in the only mainboard in the P4x800 family with ICH5R and Intel 82547EI (Gb onboard chip, it uses e1000 driver).

The chips share the same IRQ :

# grep eth0 /proc/interrupts
17: 83 IO-APIC-level Intel ICH5, eth0
(note that there's no error about this in syslog)

1) Boot on S-ATA drive / Mandrake 9.2RC1 with "acpi=off"
-> boot OK, but no ping, "NETDEV WATCHDOG: eth0: transmit timed out" in syslog.
(full log and config on http://plochon.free.fr/mdk92RC1.html )

2) Boot on S-ATA drive / Mandrake 9.2RC1 with "acpi=off" and "noapic"
-> boot hang (when displays "hde: attached ide_disk driver" where hde is the S-ATA boot drive)

3) Same tests but boot on CD with Knoppix 3.3 (Kernel 2.4.22)
-> same results

4) S-ATA drive physically removed, boot on CD / Knoppix 3.3 with "acpi=off" and "noapic"
-> boot OK, network OK : it works !

Is there a way to make S-ATA and Intel Pro work together, or is it an incompatibility ?

Thanks,
Philippe

My hardware configuration:
P4C800E-Dlx, P4C@2.6Ghz, 256Mb, 1 Seagate S-ATA drive plugged on standard S-ATA connector (-> not on S-ATA RAID connector)
IDE Bios settings :
Onboard IDE operate mode : Enhanced mode
Enhanced mode support on : S-ATA
Configure S-ATA as RAID : No

System Hang

I also have a similar hardware config and cannot boot my system with SUSE 9 Pro and am hoping to resolve this. If anyone has any idea on what the problem may be as I am not much of a linux pro but I am a user of the greatest OS ever developed

From what I have read some have this problem but I have yet to find the answer :/ It would be great to get the system up and running as I am using my wifes PC till I get this resolved. She likes that, she claims it is one more reason not to use linux but I always disagree.

Mobo- ASUS P4C800-E deluxe
CPU - Intel P4 3.2
Ram - 4 x 512 PC3200
HDD - SATA - WD Raptor 74Gb.
Promise Raid SATA - 2 x WD Raptor 36Gb.
Net - On Board Intel Gigabit (internet & network)
- + USR 2977 modem
Video - Geforce FX5900
Sound - Audigy 2
Drive - Plextor 708 DVDr/rw

have linux installed

This morning I decided to give a few other distro's to see if I could get them installed. This morning I have installed Mandrake 9.2 without a flaw. I am very happy to have a distro on my system but am hoping to still get my Suse back in line. Any help would be appreciated as to why I can load one and not the other :/

Like I have said before I am a hardware guy and well I ain't no software guru but I try

im running mandrake 10 now, it runs smoothly so far.
asus p4c800-e
p4 2,8
2 x 512 pc3200
sata wd raptor 36gb
radeon 9800 pro

i have tried out alot of distros before i tried mandrake 10, that was the only one i got to work. i belive you need that 2.6 kernel because of the sata controller or something

Opticus,

I have almost the exact config as you (slightlu faster CPU and a different SATA HD), however, I have had no luck getting the 3D accelerated XFree86 RADEON 9800 PRO driver working without consistently hard hanging the system when the X server tries to load. Do you have the ATI Linux drivers installed or are you using the generic RADEON drivers that are available in Mandrake 10?

Hi,

I'm just installed Mandrake 10 today. Everything ran very smooth, unfortunatelly the default installation can't get my onboard network to work. When I boots up the Mandrake, it freezed forever in the "Starting up eth0.." procedure. I've to press "Restart" button to force a reboot.

Does anybody has the same experience? Can you tell me how you solve the problem?

Here's my setup:
ASUS P4C800-E Deluxe P4 2.8C
ASUS Radeon 7000
2x S-ATA Seagate Hard drive (not in RAID mode)

Has anyone considerd upgrading to 2.6.6 kernal and compiling support in?

I am using a card that has the sis 964 chipset and i just compiled it right in, and it worked.

I also had to compile in support for booting off board chipsets, but im told ure mileage may vary, depending on ur mobo and bios

also y not try using slackware, its a bit harder to set up, but u can make anything work if u try hard enough
