Out of sync

Hello. I installed nexuiz a couple of weeks ago but when i started it the monitor went black telling me that the horizontal and vertical sync was 81.3 out of 65 hrz, not allowing me to see anithing. I though that it was a problem with the game and forgot about it for a while. I then installed steam through wine and downloaded hl2. When i loaded it i got the same problem. I dont think it is a problem with my drivers because i can play openarena perfectly with maximum quality enabled. How can i fix thoose problems?

System Specs
GeForce FX 5500, drivers installed through the .run from the nvidia website.
Kernel Linux 2.6.22-14-generic
Ubuntu 7.10
512 RAM
Intel Pentium 4 2.40 Ghz

Any help is higly appreciated

Hm, the question is if your monitor supports such sync rate. To tell X it does you should edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

Code:
Section "Monitor"
  Identifier "Monitor[0]"
  Option "DPMS"
# HorizSync 28-49
# VertRefresh 43-75

EndSection
So you need to specify some ranges for commented out parameters. If you will specify max HorizSync higher than 81.3, X will attempt to set monitor to that mode.

This below is my xorg.conf. I am really new to linux so please exuse my noobness. I looked up my monitor and found this, telling me that my max sync is 75 Hz x 83 kHz.

Code:
# nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
# nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder3) Thu Dec 13 19:09:35 PST 2007

# xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.

# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Hm, it is probably called "Out of luck". If a game foolishly insists on a vertical refresh of ~80Hz when your LCD is limited to 75Hz (and LCDs are usually less likely to negotiate things like that than CRTs), I doubt you can do anything. Post /var/log/X.0.log to check what exactly the game requires and if the monitor reports its modelines (settings for different resolutions), but I am not sure it will help.

well, the game isn't the problem. hl2 worked perfectly on windows, nexuiz i haven't tried though. Now i am downloading nexuiz and i think i have applied the refresh rate maximals, i will then run the game and post the log. One thing: when i get that problem i am forced to Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, will i get a log anyway?

I think yes. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace is proceeded by X server, it surely can flush logs on exit (usually it even logs the fact of exit on Ctrl-Alt-Backspace). Did you try Ctrl-Alt-F1, logging in and using ‘‘killall wine’’, by the way? It may be easier.. The problem may be with wine which incorrectly reports something to game. Try enforcing wine desktop window, it helps sometimes.

How big is you monitor?

I've never seen anything that can handle a vert refresh of 160. But to fix your problem try changing that value to 90.

This is what mine looks like.

Code:
Section "Monitor"
        Identifier "Monitor0"
        VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
        ModelName "Monitor 1280x1024"
        HorizSync 31.5 - 79.0
        VertRefresh 60.0 - 90.0
        Option "dpms"
EndSection

I'd say it looks like monitor correctly reports its capabilities to X server, so changing values will not change LCD's mind.

I changed what you guys told me to do. Maybe its me, but it looks like there are two monitors setted, screen and monitor.
This is the log i get after starting nexuiz and resetting xorg through Ctrl+Alt+Backspace. Anyways, thanks for everithing, i hope we can fix this problem.

OK, i tried somethings. First i set setedidfreqs to 0 and put vertical max to 75. I launched nexuiz and got the same error, only that i was at 74.9 out of 65, instead of 85. I also noticed that i dont really have any resolutions set in my xorg file, shouldnt there be any? currently i am at 1280x1024, or at least should be. Nvidia control panel tells me that i am, but if i go to screen resolution under preferences i have 1280x1024 at 50hrz, if i go under administration screens & graphics i see 640x480 at 60hrz. How can it be possible that i have 2 different resolutions and 3 different freqs??

X has a built-in list of VESA modes, so modelines aren't generally required these days, unless you need a custom mode or you need to tweak a standard one slightly.

Clearly, it isn't. Try xrandr from a console, the mode with the asterisk is you current mode. Or xvidtune.

I'm inclined to think that this might be a driver bug, the FX 5500 is getting on a bit, relatively speaking. I have an FX 5200 and I had problems with newer drivers (though I didn't bother trying anything more recent than 9755, some versions worked, some didn't, I gave up "upgrading" (this is on an old box I don't use very often, so it's no big deal)). I doubt Nvidia bother testing drivers with "obsolete" cards (one of the problems with binary drivers). It might be worth trying a couple of older versions (IIRC, 8642 worked well for me on the 5200).
