OPTI soundcard

I have an OPTI pnp sound system MPU compatible. That is on the hardware list for linux mandrake 7.2 and i am having trouble when i try to play an 8 bit sample it says "sox: can't open output file '/dev/dsp': no such device" only i know that the sound card is plugged in because i can hear a little sound through the line out port. Also lots of the sound programs say that sound server is not running although it is can you help me?

This should be a good start:

Here's the gist of it:

Quote:
make sure you have a device looking something like the following:

crw------- 1 statux sys 14, 3 Apr 17 1999 /dev/dsp

character special device with 600 permissions, major 14, minor 3

eyeball "cat /dev/sndstat" and see what your system currently says is
working.
Make sure that /dev/dsp device exists in your /dev directory with 600 permissions, major 14, minor 3.

i checked dev/dsp its not there! what do i do i cant run sndconfig on the root i already tried and it froze up. I looked at cat /dev/sndstat and this is what i got

config options: 0

installed drivers:

Audio drivers:
0: MAD16 WSS (82C930) (Duplex)

Synth devices:
0: Yamaha OPL3

midi devices:
0: MAD 16/mazart

Timers:
0:system clock

As root (su to root) and run this command:

/bin/mknod /dev/dsp c 14 3

From what I could tell from the page that I looked up, you want a "c" type of node (which explains the "c" in the command).

sorry it took so long went on vacation

so i tried what you said and nothing seemed to happen it just said that that was not a file or directory but i was able to run sndconfig and after that when i logged in as root i could hear the music but it didn't work on any other users and i couldn't get it to work on any audio programs.
