Opteron Linux Desktop

Can I setup a desktop running with Opteron and install Linux in it? Will it be under-using Opeteron ?

Easiest thing would be just to try the install. Opteron chips are just x86 compatible chips so there should be any problems.

What you could look into is using a 64bit distro to take advantage of the full power of the chip.

Congrats TigerLinux! You posted in the right forum!

Using Linux on an Opteron wouldn't be under using it at all, just use a 64bit distro and if it's dual-core just make sure the kernel is compiled with SMP support and it'll run like a wet dream

I had a dual opteron a while back, and it flew, but make sure youre using a 64-bit distro. You may have to recompile the kernel with the opteron specifics. I think I had to in order for it to behave properly, but it worked and was extremely fast.
