Odd mount problem

Hey, folks. Having an odd mounting problem with Debian(woody). Here's my fstab...

# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
/dev/hda2 / ext3 errors=remount-ro 0 1
/dev/hda5 none swap sw 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/fd0 /floppy auto user,noauto 0 0
/dev/cdrom /cdrom iso9660 ro,user,noauto 0 0
/dev/hda6 /usr ext3 defaults 0 2
/dev/hda1 /mnt/windows ntfs ro,users,auto 0 0
/dev/hda8 /mnt/backup vfat defaults,rw,umask=0000 0 0

The problem is that /dev/hda8 line. I get the "bad filesystem, bad sector, blah blah" error but, it is a fat32, the partition does work(under xp pro), and I had it mounted under Linux before(both debian and PHLAK). Any suggestions?

You mean you had it mounted under linux when linux was installed but it wasnt fat32 right? otherwise how did you mount a FAT32 under Linux?

No bud

No, it has always been fat32. It's actually a backup partition I made when I first built my PC for music and video, etc. I had Red Hat 9 and Debian installed BEFORE this install and both had this partition mounted in fstab as fat32 using vfat. I reinstalled Debian awhile back and now it doesn't want to mount. But, like I said, it will mount under PHLAK(Professional Hacker's Linux Assault Kit which boots from my cd-rom only) but it just won't load at boot using Debian and with fstab.

Change it to this:

/dev/hda8 /mnt/backup vfat umask=000,defaults 0 0

also as Root user type:

chmod 777 /mnt/backup

The chmod command should be done with the filesystem unmounted.

Have you checked the partition under windows for any errors?

run "/sbin/lsmod" and look for lines like:
msdos 7404 0 (autoclean)
vfat 11820 0 (autoclean)
fat 37944 0 (autoclean) [msdos vfat]

If they are not present try "modprobe <module>" for each. If modprobe can't find them you may be looking at a kernel recompile.
