NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M graphics & NVIDIA Optimus Technology

Hi.
I want to buy a laptop which has a graphic card with below specification:

NVIDIA GeForce GT 540M graphics with 1GB DDR3 VRAM and NVIDIA Optimus Technology

I studied the reviews of this laptop and in one of them it has been stated that linux has problem ith this graphic card.

I want to know if this is true or not?
and if it is true, what solution do you recommend.

thanks

The main problem is that optimus doesn't officially work on Linux, nvidia doesn't support it and never will.

However there is Ironhide (formerly bumblebee) that adds experimental support for it:

From my personal experience you should be able to run Linux on it, at worst you just won't be able to use both video cards.

Otherwise that card is supported by the nvidia drivers:

If you could tell us which laptop, maybe it would help a bit. I have an asus netbook with optimus and the nvidia card works fine with just the nvidia drivers, the intel card doesn't work, but it probably could work.

From what I see on the ASUS site and the manual, it doesn't have optimus, are you sure that it does ?

'Optimus' has given most linux users who have tired it problems.

Most people dont know about bumblebee (and its fairly new anyway), and the only other ways to get the nVidia GPU working under linux is with a BIOS swtich to 'force' the nVidia GPU, or custom EDID files.

If bumblebee doesnt work, and there is no BIOS switch, then installing the nVidia drivers will only break X.

H_TeXMeX_H, the 'optimus' setup you are using is different to the vast majority of 'optimus' setups.
