Nvidia/E-VGA e-geforce 5500 PCI installtion issues

The box that I'm working on has the following specs:
P3 - 733mhz
256 mb ram
Ubuntu 6.06
I bought an Nvidia ge-force 5500 pci by evga the other day nd I installed it today... I booted into failsafe to install the driver, it installed ok although it couldn't find the kernel-sources, and I thought that everything was ok. I typed 'exit' into the shell and it went straight into the gnome desktop. Although it didn't show the nvidia logo, i figured everything was ok, but decided to reboot just to be on the safe side. Lo and behold a few seconds into the linux boot the screen goes blank. It stayed blank. Eventually, I rebooted and the same happened. Next, I rebooted and went into failsafe through grub (again ... ) and reinstalled the driver. Typed 'exit', everything was ok, it displayed the nvidia logo and went into gdm. I checked some games, they worked well, and i thought everything was alright (for the tenth time- this wasn't to be the last either). I rebooted, screen goes blank right after linux starts. Went into failsafe, typed 'exit' boot sequence continues
and screen flashed a couple of times (about 3)... then after one of the flickers blank/normal an x dialog shows up saying something along the lines of 'video adapter problem. do you want to try again?" but after less than a second asterisk (the pbx) dialogs fill the screen as the system tries to start it although its already running. It moves just enough so that you can't see the dialog, and then stalls indefinitley as the box shuts up asterisks and stops the startup sequence. This situation keeps repeating itself at every boot. Help!

thanks,
