then the kernel wasn't compiled with support for config.gz I don't know of any other way to extract the config from a running kernel. you can try to configure it manually with 'make menuconfig' but this will require you knowing quite a bit about your system.
Ok, just playing around, I went into my /usr/src/linux directory and typed 'make config' and I have no idea what it was but it started asking me about a million questions, so I just quit out. Is there some place that would tell me what I want to answer to those things? Is that even something that would help?
Ok, I was so tired last night when I posted that, that I didn't even know you posted. I went through a lot of the things in the make config, and I didn't even know what about 80% of them were. I keep trying to post on a ubuntu only forum, but something is wrong with it. I guess I'll keep trying to post there, thank you for all your help.
Ok, just playing around with it, I found a place to get my source, so I got the nvidia to install. I can install it, and type startx and it opens just fine, but when I try to log out or restart, it takes me back to the shell. Then when I type startx again, it says my nvidia kernel and my xorg kernel don't match versions, so I have to recompile and install the nvidia drivers, and then it works again, until I want to log out or restart. Anybody have any idea what that's all about??
Edit:
The exact text of the error message is:
"Error: API mismatch: the NVIDIA kernel module has the version 1.0-7184, but this X module has the version 1.0-9746. Please make sure the kernel module and all NVIDIA driver components have the same version."
I downloaded the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run, and am installing it with 'sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9746-pkg1.run' and it runs and installs perfect now, until I reboot.
and followed the ubuntu instructions down at the bottom, finishing with uninstalling my linux-restricted-module package. That worked. X started just perfect with multi core support, but I lost my wireless drivers in the process. The guide offers an option of configuring the linux-restricted-module package, but its not in the location that the nvidia page says it is. Do you know where that config file its talking about might be located?
Nevermind! I got it working! Thanks so much for all the help! The only thing I have to fix now, is the second processor which I haven't had working all that started all this mess, is only working at half, and isn't letting me throttle it up. But this is so far off the topic of this thread, I'll make a new one. Thank you again for all the help.
