Hello
I have opensuse 11.1
I want to install my nvidia 8400gs driver.
I go to this page: es.opensuse.org/NVIDIA - openSUSE
Then I install it, but when I restart the computer...... I got only terminal.
No KDE :?:
I didnot know what to do. I am new in Linux
I reinstall my Suse again. Then I try install my nvidia driver again, and...:dazed: the same
No KDE, only terminal
I try something like init 5, or startx,
but nothing helping
Ok, I insatalled opensuse again. Now I have opensuse and KDE, but I dont want to try again installing nvidiA DRIVER again. Please for helping
Does the NVidia logo come up when you boot? Does it look like the X server tries to start but fails and exits? Check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for any mistakes. What exactly happens when you type startx?
Well, now I dont know, because I have new instalation.
So I just want to make another driver instyalation, but to be diferent.
Any advice?
Download NVIDIA drivers from NVIDIA site itself and run init 3 and install it (x server should be stopped to install)
This worked for me on Fedora ,red hat ,centos and ubuntu
I always install the NVidia driver straight from NVidia. It has been a very long time since I have had a problem doing that; they have their installer down well.
Note that you probably need to have the gcc toolset installed, and the kernel sources. That is the C compiler; without it the installer won't be able to build some modules it needs.
Also - and this is a very important point - reinstalling an operating system because of a problem is the "Windows Way". You never need to do that with Linux.
In the future, if you have trouble, just visit this site and ask and we will steer you through the repair procedure. In your current situation, all the information needed to diagnose the problem will be found in the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log, after the system tries to load the driver and fails, and then X fails to start.
Thank you for advices
Which packages I have to install before instaling the driver? Only gcc?
And please tell me what I have to do If I get terminal? All advice you tell me I will write them down, so I can access Suse desktop again.
Wait for advice and will try to install nvidia again.
You will need the kernel sources for your running distro as well as the gcc toolset.
When you get the driver from NVidia, set executable permissions on it, then shut down X Windows. This will put you at a terminal. Log in as root, and execute the NVidia file that you downloaded. Follow the prompts and it will install itself. After it is done, restart X and you should be OK.
If you get an error message about the install, then report that error message here and we can help you. After the install, if X won't start, take a look in /var/log/Xorg.0.log to find the errors and report them here.
Actually, after writing that last post, I said: "hmmm...and wandered off to the NVidia site. There was a new version of the driver which just went up today.
So I downloaded and installed it. Took only a few minutes. I logged out of KDE, then went to a console and shut down the display manager service, thus killing X. Ran the installer, then restarted the display manager and logged back in. Done!
