I have an album released by a band I was in, in the late '90s. It is one of those enhanced CDs with Windows 95 extras (sigh). My machine will not even see it, let alone play it. It completely refuses to even acknowledge that there is a device in the drive, let alone play it. All I want to do is make .ogg files from it. Normally Dolphin lets me to it as if I was just coping files from the CD.

I assume this must be something to do with this enhanced thing as other CDs play fine.

Anyone able to tell me how to get around this please?

Hmmm, I just tried grip and that works even though KDE is claiming there's no disk mounted. Que?!

Usually Audio-CDs do not contain a mountable filesystem, so normally they are never mounted, audio players and rip applications can read the data directly through the device node.

Well, I have to say, every other CD I've read while using KDE, the CD has shown up in Konqueror/Dolphin and if ogg decoders/lame are installed the album is shown as ogg/mp3.

Are you sure those are real Audio-CDs, not data CDs with MP3/OGG files on it? It may be possible that Dolphin shows Audio-CDs (I don't use KDE, so I can't say), but it will nonetheless never mount an Audio-CD.

Positive. CDs do not come with Ogg or MP3 versions of the songs on them.

I think it depends on your cd reader. Back in the early days you could mount audio cds and copy the .cda files. But a lot of DRM features got put in there and other linux changes. And then the cd audio cables went away so a new need to be able to read the discs digitally became important again. And who knows what else hardware happens now.

When I burn audio cds these days I use an iso file which is basically a file system. It's just faster when making multiple copies. An iso9660 filesystem, although audio formats do not currently have a mount type afaik. But you can still dd an iso image from the discs and use mplayer to play the iso file. When nothing else seems to work, that usually does. Although not all optical disc readers are created equal.

Wth with the state of software now. CDDL licensing from formerly GPL'd code for cdrtools. Which effectively removes cdda2wav from existing. So basically wodim, icedax, genisoimage now. And cdda2ogg and cdda2mp3 only I guess. This has simply gotten ridiculous. And has rendered the procedures I used to use for my home studio (linux only) inoperable. So much for small businesses.
