The exact kernel sound options I selected was a module called via82xx ac97, it was found under the ALSA configurations.
You mentioned my choice of OSS options while building the kernel. I was under the impression that I needed both, but I may have misunderstood what I read in other posts that made me choose the OSS option as well. If this is the case, I will try to build another kernel and leave out the OSS options this time, and see if it makes any difference.
Thanks so much for taking the time out to help me with this. If you have any other suggestions, I would love to hear them. I will build the new kernel tonight, and give an update here tomorrow.
hey as i told u i solved the problem for a day :P hehehe.... but maybe u could get it to work well.... download a driver in www.opensound.com for the via8233 (in my case) chipset and of course ur OS....after installing this my sound worked but the next day when i started Slackware it was gone again :S...somebody told me that this downloadable version is a trial...but im not sure about that...i invite u to try it and post the results plz.... myabe this could be a solution.

I tried that open sound driver. IT didn't work for me at all. I tried setting it up and nothing happened. I don't put much faith in that driver, plus you have to pay and I hate paying for software.
I just compiled a new kernel - my third version of 2.6. On this one, I kept the ALSA modules and left out the OSS ones, to see if perhaps ALSA and OSS are getting into an argument. It still didn't run. I'm begining to think that my Integrated VIA VT1612A on my LVMM3 v3.0 motherboard just isn't going to run sound.
I think perhaps I might have to shell out the cash for a new soundcard, I just don't know what else to do. Does anyone out there have this motherboard (and integrated soundcard)? If so, do you have sound?
I havent had time to read a kernel Howto to know how to recompile it.... Ill post when i do this.... if someone can help me do this i would appreciate it...thx...bb
hmmm....I still cant get it....now I have kernel 2.6.10 but sound still doesnt work... now the problem is when I try to run alsamixer it says "no mixer elemns found" so im fukt :P heh.... I need help with this...thx
Hello,
I have the same problem with an integrated Via 8235 AC97 soundcard. I used some distros until now, and I got the sound configured on each one of them (Mandrake 10, RH 9, Knoppix 3.9). But Slackware 10.1 put an end to that. I simply CANNOT hear any sound. Xmms shows the visialiser jumping up and down, but nothing. I tryed alsaconf with any available option, but nothing. I even tryed to let hotplug detect the card every time it starts up, but still nothing. And in the KDE Control Center, any checkbox I have tryed to switch it crashed.
What can I do ? What else can I try ?
After that you run alsaconf
Another driver with the same name as the old one was revealed. I just selected the first one and ran alsamixer.
Boosted the volume on PCM (Master still not going up or down )
Rebooted and boosted volume from kmix
That was all
Let me now if this works.
Hope it helps!
heh...great u like Hammerfall!! :O ....well...i will try that and see if it works...I hope it will... because without sound i just so damn boring! haha :P...ok..thats all....bb
necrozen! Sorry I'm very late in answering, but I just now observed the same problems you were having. Nothing worked for me either... I gave up until today I went into the KDE ControlCenter | Sound & Multimedia | Sound System | Harware - tab I perchance noticed that the "select the audio device" was set to "Autodetect". I switched this to ALSA and low and behold I was able to play sounds!! You will probably have bought a new soundcard by now, but I hope this might help someone new to this board. Thanks guys for all the insights!!!
