kmix would be simply a sound mixer (volume control) and that would only show something if your soundcard was first setup, and finally xmms would only play something, again, if the sound card was set up.
modprobe said you do have those modules? Or did it say you didn't? What does lsmod (that's LSMOD lowercase) return to you?
I have finally fixed the problem. Downloaded the oss drivers from opensound.com. Installed as directed. boot with option sound=0 and load oss drivers at rc5. Sound is fine. Just costs $20 for the permanent licence. Next release of alsa will probably fix the problem, i belive the beta kernal already has support for AC97.
Thanks God I have managed my sound card at last. It works!!!!
Thanks royb and MasterC, I have downloaded drivers (that royb recommended ) and they really work! Thanks guys! It is my lucky day
royb is the man! I have heard that they charge after like 30 days or something, so hopefully by then you will be able to figure out how to get it working without them, or you could just pay I guess (but for sound drivers?). I fully understand support Open Source, but 20 bucks for sound drivers kind of sucks. But, if it makes your card work, I guess you really can't put a price on music...
Nautilus, if you are going to continue attempting to tackle the problem, you may want to poke around, and find out what you can on Alsa's website, www.alsa-project.com or www.alsa-projects.com Not sure which, but it's one of the 2 I think.
in /etc/lilo.conf in 'append=' section add sound=0 to end.
created symbolic link in /etc/init.d/rc3.d S99oss which points to /etc/rc.d/init.d/oss. That file should have been create after install-oss was run.
The sound=0 disable any kernal sound drivers only required if sound is built into kernel, and the s99oss starts the oss sound at multuser mode.
All detail can be found in Readme in directory where installed. If you do not have a full licence then sound only works for 20 minutes before you need to login as root and soundoff and soundon.
