no pipe symbol

Hi,

I have various keyboard layouts installed, but none of them seem to have the pipe symbol.

Next to my z is just the shift key. On my actual keyboard is a pipe symbol just above the enter key, but I get | when I press that.

I've pressed all the keys while holding the Alt button, and the other Alt button, but I don't get pipe!

How can I make a key combination which will write the pipe symbol?

The pipe symbol on the keyboard is not the same pipe used to snort on the nose. LOL..

The key with the pipe symbol on a UK keyboard (Don't know about AZERTY or other layouts) is between the 'Z' key and the Left hand Shift key. Keytop as per JJJCR above.

Looks like you've got a US keyboard.

Play Bonny,

Agreed.

Attached are photos of US and UK keyboards.

The US keyboard only has one pipe key:
Shift + (key above Enter).

The UK keyboard has two:
Shift + (key between Shift and Z)
AltGr + (key in top left corner)

I must be confused, again! (Not hard to do with me) I have the US keyboard layout.

1. This is the pipe symbol? |

2. I thought this is the pipe symbol: ¦

The symbol in 2. is written on the key above enter, but when I press that key + shift, I get |

I thought that was wrong.

So what is ¦ ???

Whatever | is, it worked. The program I am using uses | as logical OR

On the keyboard either may be seen. My US keyboard uses the break in the middle on the key, but the system displays the solid vertical line...

There is a number of character fonts that modify specific characters to prevent confusion.

The vertical bar '|' is often represented with a break to prevent it from being interpreted as a lower case 'L', or a numeral '1', or apostrophe '!'

Similarly the number zero '0' often has a dot or 'slash' though it to prevent it being interpreted as a capital 'O'. As it is many fonts only makes the capital O slightly more 'squarish' than the numerical zero, making things like passwords or product code more difficult to type in from a read source.

It would be handy if more fonts have the same additions to better distinguish between them, but sadly so many fonts don't do that.

It gets worse with Unicode where the same design (or so close it hardly matters) could be encoded using a number of different Unicode characters.

Worse still, many website change incoming text, replacing characters (especially quotes and spaces) to non ASCII, Unicode characters. This means people copying and pasting code snippets from such web sites often find the copied code has a syntax error, and yet looks perfectly correct, due to the substituted Unicode characters.
