New opensuse installation

Dear all,
I just got my new computer with an ssd and an sshd hard disk. I have asked for windows 8 preinstallation *that I hope they did on the sshd disk*

I would like to install opensuse too and the grub boot loader. I am thinking for reducing windows partition on the ssd disk (how?) to give space for my root linux partition.

From your experience how big that partition should be? I would like to install the latest kde version and perhaps the xfce too. Otherwise I use my pc for office work. Firefox, thunderbird, opera, some ssh sessions, vlc few text editors. How much space all these need?

Regards
Alex

A 20 to 50 GB would be good.

I run basic Opensuse on a 16 gig flash drive. Depending how you use the more advanced filesystems it can get pretty crowded there.

I might error on a bit larger than trying to cut it too close.

You might consider a virtual machine. The virtual hard drives expand as needed. One can create a 200G drive and only fill it to 5 gig and have extra available. This would also save you from playing with install too much and run both at same time.

it dose depend on the size of the drive

if you HAVE the space then
/ -- 50 gig
/home --- 100 gig
SWAP -- 4 to 8 gig

if you use 20 gig for "/" that might end up a bit small
i have 85 gig set aside and am using 21 gigs of that
and this is with installing MOST things from source on a DIFFERENT partition

this is just normal Opensuse files

SUSE is a bit bloated
They include EVERYTHING including "The Kitchen Sink" and for GOOD measure toss in your Neighbor "Kitchen Sink"
