i have recently installed linux on a computer that almost everyone in the house uses but except for one thing that make this whole experience disastrous (everyone wants to switch mack to windows) and i don't want that since windows has been crashing and shutting down spontaneously, we have no way of knowing how to set up an ipod in Ubuntu Linux (we have tried all of the software that is required to perform this successfully) and no dice we have tried gtk pod and rythmbox (i am yet to install yamipod but the darn archive manager keeps telling me that the file is corrupt it always says that and i know for a fact that it isn't corrupt at all what could be the deal here)
when we tried gtkpod we plugged in the ipod, waited for Ubuntu to mount it automatically and then an autorun window came up so we just closed it, then we opened gtkpod and clicked load ipods then it said that it picked up a directory, so we selected the ipod model and nothing came up (maybe it was because we selected the wrong model but we doubt it how do we know for sure what model we have) anyway its supposed to show you the contents of the ipod but we saw nothing
we want a way to store music on the ipod through linux without having to wipe it (which is what i have been reading on all of the ipod in linux threads in many other linux related forums)
my walkman mp3 player comes up the same way but you can normally load music on it through the directory so not worried there, i wish you could do the same with the ipod (MAN I HATE APPLE)
here is a link that showed me how to set up gtkpod i got stuck on step 5 of USING GTKPOD section and confused on step 4, where exactly is the FILESYSTEM selection in the PLACES column, and what is the MEDIA folder http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/07/07...pod-in-ubuntu/

I have used ipod mini & nano video with gtkpod, you need also gtkpod-aac. I have not tried ipod touch or iphone.
Linux OS generally has a /media directory on the top line along with /home, /etc,... & anything you plug in and automatically mounts appears there: cd, ipod, usbdrive, etc.
Code:
cd /media
ls
will show you what is currently mounted there.
You will need to find exactly where and with what filename your ipod is mounted in order to follow the instructions.
Code:
cat /etc/mtab
will show you this.
This tutorial instruction is telling you to navigate to the mountpoint of your ipod on the filesystem. (I have previously revised the fstab line to mount my ipod on /home/ipod to overcome a problem.)
If gtkpod is not working for you, please post details. My problem may have been different, but just in case, look at http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...repair-644948/ where I found that my ipod was auto mounted read-only, I was however able to remount it with user read-write permissions- which is required here.
i learned recently that entering a directory in any program in linux is case sensative (for instance i didn't capitalize the IPOD folder, the default folder in gtkpod is all lowercase)
i have a dark green nano with camera (not sure about the memory size but does it really matter)
yep everything in terminal is case sensitive, not just directories & files. Nano should be fine, people are hacking solutions for touch/iphone, probably something will be available out of the box soon... Most linux apps are much better than w$ at giving a meaningful backtrace if something is not working, so if you still have trouble please post exactly what you see.
i just tried plugging the ipod in the machine again and this time i was expecting to chage the directory target since the letters weren't capitalized but this error prompt came up
Your error message is seen sometimes, of the replies I have seen the worst ones (as you suspected) require a new file system in the device, and there is a utility for doing that. Actually gtkpod doesn't take long to reload, assuming that you have the music on your hd, not just on the ipod. The most positive advice seems to be on http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...es-db.-366740/
where there appears to be an option to fix the file system within gtkpod, without actually destroying the data.
I think it's basically a registry (the iTunesDB file) that needs renewing. All the music files are on the device, and playable, but without the registry they are inaccessible to the interface, whether gtkpod or banshee, and can only be seen as system generated number sequences.
I have seen a reply that said gtkpod is only up to series 4, but I think I have used a series 5 OK. Sadly that ipod has been mislaid so I can't confirm now.
I have seen "If you use gtkpod to update your iPod, gtkpod does not use the exact same method of writing the iTunesDB file that iTunes does. So, if you use your iPod with both windows and linux, you may make your iTunesDB unreadable by gtkpod." (source is http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=671456 )
well i guess not since my sis wants to use it for windows also because she wants me to switch the computer back to widows (having to set it up to work on both operating systems every time you decide to use the other os it just seems pretty inconvient)
we bought this thing several months ago (around christmas so i would assume that this model is very recent)
Did you get to "load ipod" in gtkpod? If so, [music] > [check ipod's files], see what happens. If still not fixed, and if you can reload all your music from pc, [music] > [create ipod's directories] should prepare the device.
