need help booting grub from new harddisk

i have recently installed redhat 9 on a friends computer. he has 2 harddrives, hdc which is his windows partition and hdd, his redhat
i partitioned hdd into 3:
hdd1 - boot sector grub is installed here
hdd2 - swap
hdd3 - main disk, everything else is installed here

grub is installed, i have set the bios to boot from ide1 (his linux partition hdd1). when it comes to booting however, although there is a boot record detected, grub does not load properly. all keyboard input is stopped, there is not propmt to type anything in, the only indication that anything has happened is the single word "GRUB" at the bottom of the screen, after that, nothing happens and we have to force reboot

any idea / known issues with grub that cause such a problem??

thanks in advance

umm, I may not be on any help but can I translate your message as windows on hdc is drive 2 primary and if its a win 95 family that can't be right IMHO. Can you post whats on hda and hdb or are they optical drives?

its my understanding is that win 95/98/me need to have the o/s on drive 1 partition 1.

now I am guessing after all that you have some boot manager on hda it it exitst to point to hdd?

Assuming you understand all my gooblegook if you can boot into linux, create a boot disk at the first opportunity and then read the config or message files that are on the floppy as they will tend to point you to the relevant /dev/hdd structure.

You may also want to look at /etc/fstab and post it back here for others to peruse?
