Need advice on setting monitor and colors for photo work.

Hi!
I have to set my computer to meet standards for photo work. I read 2.2 gamma correction is used widely, but my screen is configured on 1.10. If I set it to 2.2 the result sucks. I can't see correctly the color tables supposed to calibrate it.
Is there any gamma software better than X's own config? I am using resize and rotate. Kde 3.3.2 and debian sarge. Monitor is a Samsung syncmaster 17in.

I don't know of any surefire, reliable method for calibrating a monitor except to use a colorimeter that reads the color directly from the screen. Background/room lighting can make a properly configured monitor seem contrasty or cause the sat to appear low. Same goes as monitors age -- but more so because they heat up. Age will take its toll on hue. A few years ago I was looking for a colorimeter and heard the name of one that is or was used with Macs, but I cannot recall its name. Terms like "Mac color calibrat*" put into an eBay search ought to return something useful.

Yes, I googled colorimeters... But donīt they use software? I mean, the bundled software displays images, the colorimeter measures it, and calculates the deviation. I was wondering if thereīs a linux version anywhere.
How about the gamma thing? Is it possible that the config windows is showing me the gamma factor (for some reason) divided by two? I canīt use 2.2 here, its terrible. My current setting is 1.10.
