What distribution?
Was it working and then suddenly stopped? If so, can you recall the last things you did before the problem?
When you attempt to boot, do you see the grub screen before the error message?
Can you try and look at what messages are diplayed just before the error message?

Do you have ANY Linux CDs---eg a Knoppix or other brand of live CD?
There is NO way to figure out where your kernel is, what its name is, etc. if we cannot get into the machine somehow.........
Who owns this computer? If you, then never again allow someone else to set it up for you unless you keep the install CD AND you know what they did. (or if it is an IT department that is continually staffed.)
