What distribution?
Was it working and then suddenly stopped? If so, can you recall the last things you did before the problem?
When you attempt to boot, do you see the grub screen before the error message?
Can you try and look at what messages are diplayed just before the error message?

where can I find kernel image?

I could not find kernel image.

I tried "grub> kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/hda1"
but still failed.

Could you please tell me how to reboot?

Thanks a lot!

You really need to answer the questions I asked you...

This works only if you have a separate partition for /boot AND if your kernel is actually named (or has an alias named) "vmlinuz":
Quote:
I tried "grub> kernel /vmlinuz root=/dev/hda1"
but still failed.
In addition to what I already asked: Do you have your Linux install CD--can you boot from that.

The system administrator installed the linux system for me.
He is on vacation now. So I do not know where the kernel is.

Can I find the kernel automatically?

Thanks!

Actually, I was running a programm and ran out of memory, the machine
became very slow.

Then I just hard restarted the machine by turning off the power and on and got the GRUB screen.

It is weird!

Is there a reason you don't want to answer my questions? Perhaps I should infer that--because someone else set up this system--you know nothing about it??

Do you have ANY Linux CDs---eg a Knoppix or other brand of live CD?

There is NO way to figure out where your kernel is, what its name is, etc. if we cannot get into the machine somehow.........

Who owns this computer? If you, then never again allow someone else to set it up for you unless you keep the install CD AND you know what they did. (or if it is an IT department that is continually staffed.)

I knew nothing about the machine because the department administrator
installed linux on it.

So I have to wait him back ......

Thanks a lot for your time and help!
