Moving hd to new machine. What effects on permissions

I have an ftp server that I have been using for a while now. In it I have a 120 gb hd mounted as /data. Can I move this HD to another machine and mount it with np or will there be any permissions problems or anything else that ne1 can think of. I appreciate ne suggestions.

I could think that you will encounter problems. Even if you had exactly the same user accounts on the new machine than there were on the old machine, the accounts might have different ID numbers thus causing permissions problems (just a guess since I haven't moved harddisks around myself). One solution would be to create the user accounts on the new machine with the same user IDs than on the old machine, or another solution would be to use root account to chown the files on the harddisk so the ownerships became correct, if they don't "just work". Maybe the latter one.

I connected my /data drive to my windows pc. I then used a program http://www.fs-driver.org/download.html that allowed me to read and export my data for back up. This was successful. New server needs some work still but my regular job and part-time job will keep me from doing this till at the earliest on wed. Will post more as I progress.
