mount: unknown filesystem type 'LVM2_member'

After recent upgrade Fedora 4 to Ubuntu 7 I have an issue mounting the old fedora drive. This system also has a 6 disk raid array. The Ubuntu install failed with the raid array so I had to unplug all drives but the ubuntu drive to perform the install. Now I plug back the fedora drive(and the raid) and want to mount but....

scan@terra:~$ sudo mount /dev/sdb2 /mount_hd/
Password:
mount: unknown filesystem type 'LVM2_member'

How can I mount this fedora 4 drive??

Mounting LVM volumes differs from mounting "normal" partitions. This page might have some help: http://www.brandonhutchinson.com/Mou...VM_volume.html

Basically a LVM group is inside one partition, and in that LVM group there are several volumes (root, boot, home etc. which would usually be on different partitions). There are good and bad sides in using LVM, I personally try to avoid using it anywhere just because it's easier to deal with normal partitions in problematic situations.

thanks. so it's helpful but I still am not sure what to do. pvs & lvdisplay are not working right because this install(ubuntu 7) didn't know abouth the old drive when it was installed. Not sure if it will matter but 1/2 of original LVM drives are gone because that hard drive died. Any idea how to get the lvm tools to recognize the old drive??

I was also very confused.
Fortunately I found this site via Google

How-to mount an LVM from Ubuntu
