i installed redhat linux 8.0 (psyche) 2 days ago. everything is okey except these two unfortunate things--
(1) my modem is not detected. ( motorola sm56 speaker phone-internal modem).
do i need to download the driver? if yes, from where?
i can download it with windows, but how cud i get that in linux partition?
(2) xmms media player can't play mp3 files. but the sound card is ok. i can hear the system sounds perfectly.
is it any problem with plug ins?
please help me for this worrying problems. i'm quite new to linux. infact, this is my first experience with linux.
details of my system-
p111 667MHz processor 133 bus.
intel 815EEA mother board.
128 ram
20 gb HDD. (15gb for win 98 and 5gb for linux).
RedHat comes without mp3 support. You have to download some simple plugin I believe, but I've never had to deal with that in Mandrake
Try rpmfind.net
Normally you can mount your other hard drive partitions, definately including windows ones. Again Mandrake did this automatically for me
if u download something in windows u can use the following command to get it in linux --
mkdir /mnt/win
mount -t vfat /dev/hda1 /mnt/win
replace hda1 with whatever partition your windows os is in. to get the files just browse to /mnt/win and you will be able to get all of them
to get a download from a windows98 partition(fat32) to a linux partition(ext2 or ext3), you have to mount the fat32 partition by:
1) find out which hd# is the fat32 partition, here I'll call it XX
2) create a directory in /mnt called hdaXX
3) edit /etc/fstab by adding the following line:
/dev/hdaXX /mnt/hdaXX vfat noauto,owner,users 00
Then if you download a driver or app for linux using Win98, you can reboot with linux and find it somewher in /mnt/hdaXX, but to be safe, I would copy it into a folder in your home directory and install it from there.
This worked for me, thanks to Depape, hope it works for you.
