Monitor acting strangely between X and Text mode

I recently changed my old Compaq over from Windows 95 to RedHat 7.1, and have been very pleased with the move. Overall it seems pretty good, but I am having some obvious troubles with the monitor, a V410 BTW. The visible area of the screen is different in text mode than in the X windows mode. If I line it up in the first, then when I start X it shifts to the left about an inch, making a nice chunk of screen disappear. I then have to turn the knob and move it over to the right so I can see it. When I go back, I have to do the same or the right hand side of the text screen is missing. Both seem to be the right size, but they are in different orientations, making it impossible to change smoothly between them. This is getting to be a pain having to move it around all of the time, even though it appears to be working fine otherwise. Is this a problem with the setup or configuration, or am I looking at something more internal to the actual monitor? It worked fine under Windows, so I expected that it would be able to do so under Linux. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,

Cothrige

It is unlikely that you'll be able to simply do anything about this issue. This is a non-issue for most people, because they almost exclusively use either X or text. However, one possible solution would be to use framebuffer graphics modes at the console to run it at a higher resolution which your monitor would react to in the same way that it reacts to your X resolution. However, I'm not sure how easy that would be with such outdated software as RH7.1.

Perhaps the framebuffer HOWTO will be of assistance.

xvidtune (man xvidtune) might help

It's a while since I used it - so I can't say much more except I should
add be careful and save you configs before messing about with them.

Perhaps a google search on xvidtune and XFree86 might find more info.
