Modem installation?

Hi, im a noob. I recently installed Slackware 9.0. I want to know if my modem work(which command I can use) and if my modem isn't installed, how I install that.

First you need to know of it is linux compatible. Run "lspci' at a prompt to find out it's name. Then use the 'net to find drivers, if it's a hardware or softmodem, and if it works in linux. Look at the PPP-HOWTO, the Modem-HOWTO, and the Linmodem-Howto at www.tldp.org for the commands.

my modem is a pctel, chipset 789, i have the pctel-0.9.6 driver. I try to installed it, i got an error when I whant to test my modem with minicom, its says : minicom: cannot open /dev/modem: No such file or directory.
I read the faq and they suggest rebuild the ttyS15, im on slackware and I dont know the number, example : redhat bash$ mknod /dev/ttyS15 c 62 79
but slackware i dont know.
And I dont want to cause I dont think it will help, do you have some tips??
