OK! I know that this has cropped up dozens of times, but I am a real newbie to Linux and Ubuntu Feisty Fawn. I haave managed my printer, scanner, USB sticks etc. but now need internet connection. And I need it in step by step, not "Linux" language.
I have an external Zoom V92 modem for a lap-top. The chip-set is HFS Conexant 56K V.92,
Please ............! Where do I go from here, without churning a 75 year old brain.
From what I can read it seems that most of the Zoom external usb modems are linux compatible. Without a model number it may be difficult to help and I'm sure we're going to work that 75 year old brain a little.
I'm not familiar with Feisty but see if you don't have " kppp" dialer. Configure and see if we are lucky, it'll find the modem.
You see Larry this is where I am lost. I can follow Windows installations so easily, but Linux!! I have looked around and don't know where to find kppp dialer. I cannot find anything like it. Where do I look? And then I suppose I won't have a clue how to configure. I told you about my brain didn't I?
Now done above but nothing at all happens, except showing a greyed out "kppp" in the left hand column. Right clicked on it but again nothing happened. Do I give up?
No don't quit this easy, when you open synaptic and do the - search - is there also a listing of - ALL - above the kppp. Click on the all and in the right pane it should list all of the installed and other available. If everything is still grayed out let us know

No, when I click on "all" there is a list in the right hand pane which is NOT greyed out but kppp is not there. And of course I can't download any extras! OK - what's next?!
Hang on, I don't have Feisty. I will have to do some research, Mepis came with the kppp option. Check and see if wvdial is in synaptic and will install, it's basically does the same job. Let me know and I'll get back as soon as possible and maybe someone who has installed Feisty will jump in with the answer.

If you still have questions we'll see if we can help. From what I read you could have wvdial if kppp isn't default.
Sorry Larry but I really feel I must give up. I have clicked on Wvdial and it shows that it is installed and that it is for Ubuntu. It implies that the modem will be recognised and that all that is needed is the dial-up details. I have those entered and I THINK I have tried to connect but am not sure about this. However whilst it shows up in my folder if I plug in a USB pen, nothing shows up for the plug-in modem. As far as the website that you linked me to goes I'm afraid that I cannot understand it all. Anyway thanks for your interest - at least I can connect to the internet on my Windows machine (wash your mouth out U22!).
