Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Modem detection

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
Alright, I have setup a internet account for MSN on Linux. The problem that I face now is this.

When I open the hardware screen linux only sees a generic modem. I have an external US Robotics Courier modem. How do I get Linux to see the modem?

Hi.

As far as I'm aware, external modems are pretty much driverless, so they don't need to be detected, however, I'll point you to the US robotics site - there's a bit on installing under Linux, if you click on the appropriate menus.

Cheers.

Hello,
Frist I want to say thanks for the help. I am still really very new to Linux and I am moving along slowly.

I was looking at the Support page for my modem but the only thing I found was some info on how to install the modem in Linux 3.0. Do you know if the instructions will work with Linux 9? It involves moving the DIP switches and I don't want to less something up unless I have to.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi again.

The version numbers on Linux distrobutions are misleading - Debian might be on version 3, while RedHat are on version 9, but it's still the same software (or similar).

The version you need to worry about is the kernel version (it's currently at 2.4.xxxxx).

In answer to your question, the instructions will most likely work. Drivers and hardware issues almost always affect the kernel, and all major distrobutions are using the 2.4 kernel at the moment, so I would go for what it says on the US Robotics site.

Dave.
