Hi, linux newbie here I just installed redhat 7.3 and I couldn't get my lucent modem to work, I have read about problems with this so I went out and bought the Modem Blaster PCI model DI5630-5. I can't get this to work either!!
Has anybody gotten this modem to work? How would I going about installing it? Thanks in advance for any help.
OK, checking the [url=http://www.idir.net/~gromitkc/pci_list.html] PCI Winmodem list, it appears as though you've been unlucky again. Sorry. Although there are some hardware PCI modems, they are very few and far between. My advice, as it always is, is to try and offload your modem to someone that is highly unlikely to use Linux, and buy yourself a decent serial modem. Serial modems cannot fail to be hardware modems, whereas external USB modems can frequently be software/Winmodems.
Thank you for your response thymox. I was able to find drivers for my lucent modem and after a day of fiddling around i finaly got them to work. The first email I got trough linux is the one notifiying me of your reply. lol. Now I have a brand new modem blaster that's useless to me... oh well..maybe I can return it.
Well, most shops are fairly narky about things like that (or they certainly are here in England... where are you from? - you haven't put anything in your details section). For instance, if you took it back to the shop and said 'it doesn't work' when it does under Windows, then they will probably not take it back because it is likely to have 'Windows 95 or above" in the minimum specs sheet. I actually had a USB modem that I couldn't get working (bought it from my housemate... because it didn't work under XP), so I swapped for a nice serial one that my Mum had. Since she only ever uses Windows (and usually only to play Spider Solitaire, anyway), she doesn't even notice the difference.
It's good to hear that you got your Lucent modem working, though. Getting a Winmodem to work under Linux is quite often what turns people away. I hope all you other adventures in Linux are quite so fruitful.
