Question MIDI I/O Card that works w. Linux?

A client of mine needs a computer that can capture MIDI from a synthesizer keyboard. I'm new to MIDI and pretty new to Linux.

I need to pick out a card capable of capturing MIDI that will work well in Linux with minimal hassle. I've read something about intelligent mode vs. uart mode for MPU-401. I know nothing, however, and this information was lost on me.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks a lot!

Not sure about intelligent mode vs. uart mode for MPU-401...

But I have connected MIDI keyboard to my PC via Creative SB Live! and Audigy (exclude the LS model), it works great with both cards in Rosegarden-4 under Linux ALSA driver.

Thanks!

To further my original question:
Would a USB MIDI interface work well, or are they generally crap? I'm considering getting the Audigy, because it's the cheapest all-around contender, but I might get a MoBo with integrated audio, which would make the extra soundcard unnecessary.

I see in kernel 2.6 there is under ALSA devices a generic USB MIDI devices as well as under USB devices. Would this work in conjunction with the generic MPU-401 UART supported in ALSA? I'm looking at the devices at http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/...o=asc/sc=price

I realize I may be coming off a little needy , but I don't want to tell my client to buy the wrong thing.

Oh, and what about the MIDI/Gameport adaptors?

I haven't tried USB Midi solution so I can't tell:

This is the thread you can start to look at:
http://alsa.opensrc.org/index.php?pa...uencer+support

As for MIDI/Game Port adaptor, I just think getting a SB Audigy is the most straightforward approach.

However, USB devices in general do not have soundfont support.
