Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 5000 (really strange)

I was using this mouse fine. I have had issues with it in the past with Linux (Various distro's) The scroll wheel was extremely sensitive. One small touch and it would scroll the whole page. (The common factor somehow is when I duel boot+)

So I installed Xubuntu, the only OS on my computer. The scroll wheel worked fine. Then, out of laziness, I installed Windows 7 until I can get a game to work with Wine. All of a sudden the mouse scroll wheel started acting like it used to, very sensitive. I had to move my computer around and I ended up putting the USB connections for the mouse and keyboard backwards. I first booted into Xubuntu, my main OS and the mouse scroll wheel was fine. Back to normal. Then I booted into Windows 7 for the game. When I switched back to Xubuntu the scroll wheel was acting up again.

This makes no sense. I am not even sure where to start looking. BIOS? Is there some sort of memory on the mouse that tells it to not play nice unless it is a Windows OS? LOL, I am lost on this one.

I just wanted to add to this. I was gone all day yesterday and had my computer off. When I got home I turned it on, booted into Xubuntu for a few minutes. Then I went into Windows 7 briefly and then back to Xubuntu. The scroll wheel did the same thing. Today I have only had Xubuntu booted (after I had the computer off,) for a couple of hours and no problem at all with the scroll wheel.

I wanted to add this, even though I made this post awhile ago.

I no longer have the same problem I had before. Changes since then;

*I moved the computer (Maybe something in the area I use to have it in was interfering somehow.)
*I have XP installed (Stuck using it with one game only at the moment.)
*I now have Ubuntu 10.04 and PC-BSD 8.0 installed

I have no idea what happened but I am thinking it has more to do with the location then anything else, this is an old building.

Edit: I marked this thread as solved because I really think the problem had to do with location. Not sure how or why, but that is the only thing that makes even a little bit of sense.

help me, please.
Mouse has been disconnecting at irregular intervals. Sometimes it's fine for about an hour, but sometimes it drops connection every few minutes. Also, sometimes it doesn't reconnect without turn off/on.
I tryed fedora 9,10,11, Ubuntu, Jolicloud. All OS have this issue.
But in the WinXP all ok.

find this issue also there forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=196853
but there isn't solution.

bronskiy,

Try moving your computer somewhere else (as Amdx2_x64 did - it seemed to fix his problem, which was probably due to electrical interference from some other piece of equipment)

Welcome to LQ!

Edit: This thread is old, and already marked as SOLVED by the OP, in future, please start a new one. /Edit

I have this same mouse and as far as I can tell, the problem is with the USB wireless receiver. I also have a dual boot set-up with Windows 7 and ubuntu. It took some time for me to catch on to what was happening but I figured out that the super fast scrolling only occurred when rebooted from Windows 7 to ubuntu and not if I booted from off to ubuntu. I haven't found a permanent fix for the problem but for now you can do one of these two work arounds:

First and easiest for me is when I need switch from Windows 7 then I do a complete shut-down (not just a reboot) and then boot straight to ubuntu or other Linux distro.

Second if you have access to the USB port that the wireless receiver is plugged into then you can just unplug it after you have already rebooted from Windows and are completely booted into Linux. (I believe this clears some settings in the receiver itself that are stored there by the windows drivers for whatever reason)

Hope this helps

warl0q,

Welcome to LQ!

Thanks for this further information, and your solutions.

I looks as though win is writing some microcode to the USB receiver that breaks it for subsequent use with linux.

I wonder why win should do this. Does this mouse have any "enhanced" function(s) when used with win?

[I use "Logitech" branded mice. Never had a problem with any of them & linux.]
