Media PC's plus Linux

My home digital set top box has blown up and I want to replace it with a fully customised linux system with wi-fi, DVD recorder, and everything else a man could want to plug it into his TV and watch TV (time shift recording etc).

Does anyone know any suppliers who do this, or is there a step by step instruction guide on this? Just a dream but it would be fun.

If you've got a few days to do this, the gentoo wiki has a step by step guide.
If you want it a little quicker, I installed Knoppmyth R5A9 for a friend and we had it up and running within an hour. Knoppmyth's installer asked less than 10 questions and then you set back and watch it install
